Unity of Colorado

What is Unity?

Unity is a worldwide positive, practical Christian denomination that was founded in 1889. It has no creedal requirements, dogma or ecclesiastical hierarchy. Unity believes that there are many paths to God and Truth, and therefore, does not argue or proselytize, but aims to promote spiritual understanding, respect and harmony.

Unity's Basic Teachings

  1. There is only one presence and one power in the universe and in our lives, God, Absolute Good. This denies the reality of evil in conflict with God. Evil is the product of humanity's distorted use of creative power, and as such can be dealt with by humanity.

  2. God is within every person and all of existence. Every person and all of existence are inherently good.

  3. We can connect directly with the Divinity within and around us through meditation-the practice of mystical or contemplative prayer; following our guidance in all we do; and acknowledging the Divinity in others and in all of creation.

  4. Thoughts are a creative power. Prayer is a focused form of thought and word that brings forth healing, wisdom, prosperity, joy and peace. In Unity, affirmative prayer is used to change our Consciousness.

  5. Spirituality makes a positive, practical difference in our daily lives. Unity's focus is on experiencing the Kingdom of Heaven today rather that on an afterlife.

Unity's Statement for Peace

Unity stands for peace in the presence of conflict; for love in the presence of hatred; for forgiveness in the presence of injury. Unity honors the many names for God, the many paths to God, the many ways of worshiping God, for we know that there is only one power and presence of God, and that God loves us equally. It is therefore the position of Unity to urge all nations, their leaders, and their people to turn to God, by whatever name, and ask for guidance during these challenging times and pursue peace, not war, for this is what honors the God of all our faith traditions. Unity stands for peace in our lifetime.
